Snow, snow and more snow (Demo)

I popped back to the UK at the end of February to see my Mum and sister in Manchester,(they’re fine, thanks for asking) just as the snow hit both Romania and the UK. What a contrast between the two countries in how they respond to the weather. Here there was a brief Orange warning, snow ploughs out during the night, roads clear, the airport running fine. The UK, however, ground to a complete standstill. The army was called in to help stranded motorists, kids were off school, the BBC spent hours talking about the snow, interviews with teachers and snotty nosed school kids grinning their little heads off because they have a day off. Relentless coverage of the ‘Beast from the East’ as the media called the snow storm. The UK’s obsession with the weather is well known, but what I saw on TV was just incredible, I was glad to get back to Bucharest!

I love Romania and all that it has to offer, apart from that is, service and hospitality in bars and restaurants, going back to the UK brought that point home. I ate lots of great food, including an excellent curry. The same high level of service was in every restaurant and bar I went in, even a Wetherspoons in my home town of Sale. Service in restaurants and bars here in Bucharest has always been a bugbear of mine, it is slowly improving, but not quick enough. Expensive restaurants generally have it, but it isn’t filtering down to the mid range establishments. It would appear that Romanians don’t want good service, or maybe I am wrong. I know that I would tip more if I was on the receiving end of great food and great service.

So the thaw has started, and hopefully we have seen the last of the snow. I am looking forward to working on my house and garden, loads to do, new roof, indoor loo, landscape the garden, it will make a change from thinking about the political situation both here and in the UK.

Until the next time.
